Emmanuel Baptist Church held its first meeting at the Southern Pig Restaurant on Southern Avenue on May 1,1960.  The church was organized the same day under the direction of Rev. Roy A. Harrell with approximately  80 charter members.  The church met for approximately ten months in the old Hughes home on Pennsylvania Avenue.  They moved into the present building in 1961.

The membership grew to more than 240 in Sunday School with an average of 175 in regular attendance. An addition of Sunday School rooms was added to the structure in 1961 and a new four bedroom brick parsonage was erected in 1967.  Several additions and  many renovations have been made since that time.  This picture was taken in 1969.
